YACHT CHARTER CARIBBEAN / LEEWARDS & WINDWARDS:

Locations & Ports:
Gouadeloupe / Point-à-Pitre, Martinique / Le Marin, St. Lucia, St. Martin / Anse Marcel

Sea & Coast:
The Caribbean Islands extend about 4000 km from the north to the south, forming a smooth curve. They are of different size and make together about 234 thousand square km island surface. The Caribbean Islands are divided into several island groups: The Bahamas, the Small Antilles, and the Large Antilles including Cuba, Hispanola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands. The Small Antilles are further divided into the islands "over the wind” or Leewards (eastern curve) and the islands "under the wind” or Windwards (southern curve) from the Venezuelan coast. The lee coasts of the islands normally have no reefs. Especially the British Virgin Islands, which are situated in the north-east of the Virgin Islands and lie at a short distance from each other, offer ideal conditions for simple sailing cruises with children or for those, who are for the first time in the Caribbean. Just within a few sea miles you will find well protected anchoring bays, which attract with their turquoise-blue water and white sand beaches. Martinique, a southern island with French traditions, which belongs to the Windward group of islands, is one of the best sailing areas in the Caribbean. Each of the Caribbean islands has its very own special character.

Winds & Weather:
As in the tropics in general, there are no distinct seasons with different temperatures on the Caribbean Islands, which makes sailing possible all the year through. The hottest period is from July to December. The average air temperature is 22 – 30 degrees Celsius with usually high humidity. The average water temperature is about 27 degrees Celsius. The Caribbean Islands are situated exactly in the trade wind belt with predominant wind from the north-east of 3-5 Beaufort. In December and January, stronger trade winds and thunderstorms may occur. The hurricane season lasts from May to November.
